This display relies on visual skills to provide a feeling on what happens on Twitter. Human brain is way too slow to read the worldwide tweets posted on a hot topic (such as Youtube and Facebook). But the virtual cortex has powerful skills that include the perception of motion (here, transmits how active a topic is) and visual categorization (colors facilitate the comparison of topics).
